ABSTINENCE UNTIL MARRIAGE UNIT

Dear Parents:
This letter is to inform you that your child will be offered an Abstinence Until Marriage (AUM) unit in his/her Healthful Living class. The unit will be instructed during the 2nd Semester.
This unit reflects an abstinence until marriage focus as required by the North Carolina State Board of Education. This curriculum has been designed to provide students with information, decision-making skills and resources that will encourage thoughtful and responsible behavior.
A variety of teaching techniques will be used during this unit including lecture, discussion, video, small group and individual projects and several parent/student homework assignments. These parent/student homework assignments have been designed to encourage increased levels of communication and to create opportunities for dialogue.
The materials used in the program are available for review by any Wake County Public School parent/guardian. Materials for review are located in the main office and in the media center @ Durant Road Middle School. We believe the AUM focus of curriculum is a valuable asset for your child. However, we will honor any requests by parents/guardians to have their child excused from all or part of this unit. There will be no academic penalty for doing so. In this case, an alternative unit of study and health assignment will be given.
Parents will be given the 1st Semester to review AUM materials. Please return this form, signed by a parent/guardian with your child by the end of the 1st Semester if you DO NOT want your child to participate in the AUM unit. This will allow the teacher time to prepare and make arrangements for the assignments & the alternative unit of study.
