Social responsibility is one strand of the
Healthful Living Standard Course of Study. Students
should develop an awareness of and respect for
cultural diversity through participation in physical
activities and develop abilities to function in
group activities. Students will participate in
activities with a variety of individuals who differ
from each other. Students will engage in physical
activities that provide for challenge, problem-
solving and decision-making, appropriate risk-taking
choices, fair play and sportsmanship behaviors.
Please support the Healthful Living department
by encouraging your child to refrain from taunting,
intimidating others and bullying. Students sometimes
struggle with behaving appropriately when
transitioning from core classes to health and physical
education. The class structure and environment is
very different. The mobile units for health and the
gymnasium/locker rooms for physical education are a further distance for students to travel. There is a greater opportunity for horseplay, unsafe and unhealthy choices. It will be a great benefit to your child and to our department if you would discuss and emphasize these points with your child.
As a department we embrace and welcome the unique differences of each child and desire a safe and healthy environment for all.

Competency Goal 7:
• Know and apply rules & safe practices in a variety of physical activities
Competency Goal 10:
• Make conscious decisions about playing within the rules, procedures and etiquette of a game or activity
• Utilize time effectively to complete assigned tasks
• Work cooperatively and productively in a group to accomplish a set goal in both cooperative and competitive activities
• Resolve interpersonal conflicts with sensitivity to the rights and feelings of others
• Engage in fair play and show self-control by accepting a controversial decision
• Display empathy to the feelings of others during physical activity
